MultiGas Leak Detection System

Alternative-Fueled Vehicle: Leak Detection System

Four combustible gas sensors are installed at potential fuel gas leakage sites on a bus or truck (engine, fuel tanks, piping/valving, cabin) to detect high levels of potentially explosive fuel gas. A compact cab-mounted operator display (4.25” x 3” x 1.4”) monitors the four sensors, and alarms if any sensor reaches an alarm threshold. The wide spectrum sensors respond properly to essentially any combustible gas, including CNG, LNG, methane, ethane, propane, butane and hydrogen.

The picture shows the four sensors.

If any of the four sensors indicates an elevated reading in excess of 20% of the lower explosive limit (1% methane equiv), a visual/audible alarm is activated. An LED shows which sensor is in alarm. The vehicle operator can silence the audible horn by pressing the acknowledge button on the control panel, but the alarm LED continues lit until the gas level drops below the alarm threshold.

The operator display, shown to the left, is installed within the driver’s reach and view, mounted to avoid contact with operator or occupants from abrupt vehicle movements.

A gas-alarm relay is activated when any sensor is in alarm. This relay can be wired to activate external equipment such as existing communications, loggers, fuel system controls, engine ignition, and the like. Relay contacts are rated at 50VDC, 5A. An alarm override switch temporarily resets this alarm relay, and enabling the vehicle to continue operation to a safe stop for inspection and maintenance. The relays and analog inputs are located in the LDS Controller. The controller dimensions are 8”x4”x3”.

The -40F to 250F gas sensors are installed in high-temp cushioned clamps, providing both friction and positive mechanical capture of the sensing module to minimize shock, vibration and movement. An electrical connector on each sensor cable enables quick disconnect for service.

MultiGas Leak Detection System Automatic Sensor CalibrationMultiGas Leak Detection System Automatic Sensor Calibration
A unique, fully automatic sensor calibration utility is included which calibrates every sensor’s 20% LEL alarm threshold on pushbutton command by operator. MagiKal eliminates the cost and labor of manual calibration, while assuring accuracy of the LDS for years to come. Cal-gas is NIST traceable to national standards. If a sensor fault occurs, the green “OK” LED turns off and the sensor’s red fault LED lights.

The two zero/span cal-gas tanks usually last for years of monthly calibrations. Replacements can be purchased from Rel-Tek. Compared with systems requiring manual calibration, the cost savings from MagiKal can pay back the price of the entire MG-LDS in a very short time.

The entire MG-LDS is powered from 10VDC to 30VDC, drawing about 600mA max under normal conditions. All sensor cable terminations on the control panel four 3- conductor 18-AWG cables connect gas sensors electrically using 12 compression terminals are prominently well-marked compression screw terminals on the back extension on the controller. Just strip the wire, insert and tighten. A 3- conductor 14-AWG cable connects the controller to a secure, 12V (2A FB fuse) vehicle battery source Providing terminations instead of plugs enables each cable length to be cut to fit, avoiding excess cable loops to stow. Cable lengths to 100-ft are OK. The in-line connectors with prefabricated cable lengths facilitate sensor installation and service. The driver should immediately and safely respond to any gas alarm in accordance with procedures established by Rel-Tek, as well as by the vehicle manufacturer, fleet owners and all authorities having jurisdiction.
